Tally Taught Pakistan Double Entry. It Was Never Built for FBR.
If your business runs on Tally, you already believe in proper books. The question is whether the next ten years should run on a desktop package designed for another country's tax system, or on a cloud ERP that files to FBR, tracks udhar and cheques the way your market works, and runs every branch from one account.
Tally (now TallyPrime) is a mature desktop accounting product with strong ledgers, inventory and GST features designed for India. E-Khata Cloud is a cloud accounting and inventory ERP built for Pakistani businesses, with FBR Digital Invoicing, Tier-1 POS and PRA filing, udhar, cheque and committee workflows, multi-branch operation, Urdu on every document, and setup and data migration done by our team. The table below compares the two on the points a Pakistani buyer actually decides on.
Side by side
| What matters | E-Khata Cloud | Tally (TallyPrime) |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Pakistan: PKR, Urdu, udhar, FBR and provincial tax bodies. | India: GST, e-way bills and Indian statutory reports. Pakistan use relies on generic features. |
| FBR Digital Invoicing, Tier-1 POS, PRA | Built in, each configured separately, with a review-then-file queue, preflight checks and FBR reference lookups. | No native FBR Digital Invoicing filing. Requires a third-party connector or manual entry on the FBR portal. |
| Cloud, desktop and mobile | Web app, Windows desktop and Android app on one account; billing keeps working offline. | Desktop-first, licensed per machine. Remote access through add-ons or a hosted Tally. |
| Udhar, cheques and kameti | Party ledgers with aging, a cheque register with every state through to bounce, and committees as first-class records. | Party ledgers and post-dated cheque entries. No committee concept. |
| Multi-branch | Each branch a real business under one head office, with stock transfers in transit, inter-branch settlements and consolidated reports. | Multiple companies or godowns in one file; consolidation and inter-branch settlement are manual. |
| Production and job work | Recipes, stages, batch board, processor lots tracked in the issued unit, and the karigar's labour as a payable. | Manufacturing journals and job work features exist; processor lot tracking is simpler. |
| Serial and warranty tracking | Per-unit serials with two warranty clocks, RMA in and out, and exposure reports. | Batch tracking; serial-level warranty is not a native concept. |
| Urdu | Urdu names on products and parties, bilingual invoices, Urdu support. | English interface; Urdu invoice text requires custom formatting. |
| Reports | 71 reports including FBR Annexure-C and Annexure-A, WHT, consolidated branch reports and warranty exposure. | Deep financial reports; statutory reports are Indian. |
| Data migration | Done with you by our team: products, parties, chart of accounts, opening stock and balances imported with preview and undo. | Your own export and re-entry, or a consultant. |
| Pricing and support | Quoted per business in PKR, setup and Urdu or English WhatsApp support included. | Per-machine licence plus a subscription for updates; support through resellers. |

Choose E-Khata Cloud if you are a Pakistani business that needs FBR filing, runs on udhar and cheques, has or will have more than one branch, or wants the books reachable from a phone.
Stay on Tally if you are a single-location business with no FBR Digital Invoicing obligation, an accountant who lives in Tally, and no need for cloud access.
What moving from Tally actually involves
Export your ledgers, stock items and parties from Tally to Excel. The E-Khata import screens take products with prices and units, parties with opening balances, and the chart of accounts with its tree, each with a preview and an undo. Opening balances go in on their own screen and the trial balance shows when they tie. Our team does this with you; it is part of the quote, not an extra.
- Products, parties and chart of accounts imported from Tally exports.
- Opening balances entered with the trial balance beside them.
- Your Tally file stays as the archive; nothing is lost.
The FBR difference is the whole difference
A sales-tax-registered business in Pakistan now files invoices to FBR. In Tally that is a portal you visit or a connector you buy. In E-Khata the invoice carries the HS code, the FBR unit and the buyer's filer status, a preflight lists what FBR would reject, and a person previews the exact payload and files. Returns go back as credit notes and the Annexure-C register is a report.
What Tally still does well
Tally's ledger discipline, keyboard speed and depth of financial reporting are real, and many Pakistani accountants know it by heart. If your only requirement is a single-machine general ledger and you have no FBR filing obligation, it remains a reasonable tool. The comparison above is about the rest of the business: stock across branches, udhar recovery, cheques, compliance and access from anywhere.
